About Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening generally refers to bleaching the teeth with hydrogen peroxide. Sometimes, a higher percentage of carbamide peroxide is used, which breaks down to a lower percentage of hydrogen peroxide. The treatment can either be done in the dental chair, using a stronger solution and masking to protect the gums from burning, or in take-home trays, using a weaker solution. Sometimes, bright lights or lasers can be used in the dental chair to accelerate the effects of the hydrogen peroxide.
Bleaching the teeth will not remove stains- these will need to be removed first by professional cleaning. Bleaching will also not whiten porcelain or resin, so any discoloured fillings may need to be replaced.
We believe in using take-home trays for bleaching, for a few reasons- bleaching in the dental chair is more superficial, and part of the initial “whitening” effect is caused by dessication of the enamel from having the mouth open for a long period of time. It is also relatively expensive, as more chairside time is needed. The use of lights or lasers will make it more expensive again.
Trays with a bleaching gel are a more effective long term way to whiten teeth. They can be made from impressions of the teeth, or supplied as a ready made item that is an average fit for most people. We have started using the latter method, as it cheaper because it does not require surgery and laboratory time. Once the trays are purchased, it is possible to reuse them indefinitely in the future by using a refill bottle of bleach.
