Crowns

A crown generally refers to a “full” crown, which means it covers the whole tooth. It is a jacket of artificial material which is usually made by a dental technician from an impression of the tooth. A crown is usually done where a tooth is too badly broken down to be restored with filling material. It may also be done when a tooth has a crack, to stop the crack from developing further.

Fillings

As most dentists do these days, we use tooth-coloured filling materials. We don’t have any philosophical objection to using silver amalgam, and may in fact use it about once a year, but the tooth-coloured materials have a lot of advantages. These include better aesthetics, more conservative tooth preparation allowed and preserving strength in the tooth from good bonding.

Root Canals

Root canal treatment refers to treatment of the root canal/s of the tooth, where the nerves and blood vessels extend down from the pulp chamber in the crown of the tooth. The treatment is usually necessary when bacteria enter the pulp from a cavity or a crack, or from severe gum disease. Sometimes it is necessary when a tooth has been subject to trauma or knocked out, damaging its blood supply.

Tooth Whitening

Teeth whitening generally refers to bleaching the teeth with hydrogen peroxide. Sometimes, a higher percentage of carbamide peroxide is used, which breaks down to a lower percentage of hydrogen peroxide. The treatment can either be done in the dental chair, or in take-home trays.

General Checkups

A standard dental check-up will generally include an oral exam of your teeth, gums and mouth.

This is to check your health and diagnose any potential problem areas.

Veneers

A veneer refers to a thin layer of material bonded to a tooth. Veneers are usually done on upper front teeth, to change the shape and/or the colour of the tooth. A veneer is a much more conservative way of achieving this than placing a crown, which involves more tooth reduction.

Dr Greg

Dr. Greg Hilton graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1980. He spent three years in London in the 1980’s and has practiced in Perth since then.

Greg and his team at Dentalcare of Forrestfield aims help you achieve a healthy, maintainable dentition that YOU are aesthetically comfortable with.

We will guide you rather than try to persuade you, through the often many treatment options. After a complete examination, we will discuss your concerns and goals with you, then recommend the minimum and least expensive treatment we consider necessary to achieve these goals.  If we consider that a more expensive form of treatment may be better and in fact cheaper for you in the long run, then we will discuss this with you.

An estimate will be given for any planned treatment. If we don’t think we can ourselves achieve what you need, we will offer you a referral to someone who can. Our equipment is modern and up to date and well maintained.
